I've always had a certain fondness for Centaurs. Why? Because they sail well for a 26ft bilge keeler and quite simply do what they are meant to do. They are a solid no nonsense sort of boat from another era - a bit like their owners really, and I should know because this was my very own boat nearly twenty years ago! It was my first 'proper yacht', one that I was happy to go anywhere in. I'd had a couple of smaller yachts before her of course, but this was the first yacht where my wife and I and three teenage children had room to swing a cat - or a dog as it turned out. Yes, even our terrier loved her too! I only kept her (the yacht) for three seasons but the lucky chap I sold her to has kept her for the following 19 years and she is only for sale as he has recently purchased a bigger Westerly; of course.
She has done him proud in that 19 years, Ireland, Scillies, English Channel, IOM, she has taken him everywhere in safety and comfort. He has also done her proud with a new motor, fuel tank, upholstery and head linings and window seals. She is better than she was when he purchased her yet she lacks all those quirky 'owner improvements' that detract from the value of so many production yachts! She is clean, tidy and fresh below and the preventative epoxy (Blakes) that I had professionally applied back in 1991 appears to be doing its job still. Her owner has a few 'pre sales' jobs listed such as a scrape back below the waterline, hull polish above and a refix of the masthead tri colour (keen spotters will have noticed that!).
She will be re photographed when these jobs are completed. NB Hull polish completed 12/11/13.
